A chimney brush is the essential tool for cleaning out a chimney
and fireplace. Used for flue cleaning, you must measure the diameter
of your chimney’s flue before selecting the correct brush
that will clean out the creosote without damaging the walls of
the flue or chimney liner.
Wire bristle is the most common chimney brush. It’s stiffer
than a regular brush and flat tines offer the needed scraping
action. This is the best brush for removing glazed creosote. But
this brush should not be used for cleaning the metal liners of
prefab chimneys.
A poly chimney brush is most often used on metal flues because
it won’t scratch and damage the walls. The poly brush is
very stiff though, and won’t be making it around any bends
or unusual shapes.
