A chimney liner is a flexible pipe (in prefab fireplaces) or
tiled or metal piping (in masonry fireplaces. The liner is designed
to contain the products of combustion in the chimney.
For chimney flues to be safe and useable, a chimney liner must
be intact and free from holes, cracks, or other damage that would
allow combustibles to escape and start a chimney fire. The most
combustible by-product of a fireplace is called creosote.
Creosote is heavy and oily and sticks to chimney walls instead
of making it up and out. A chimney liner is designed to contain
creosote and lessen the chances of it re-igniting inside the chimney
before it can be cleaned out. This is just one more reason why
you should have your fireplace professionally cleaned and inspected
at least once a year before the burning season.
